PPE Hierarchy
PPE is the LAST line of defense in the hierarchy of controls, not the first. Engineering and administrative controls must be attempted first. However, when PPE is required, it is MANDATORY — no exceptions on LEO job sites.
Required PPE at LEO Sites
Minimum PPE requirements on all LEO sites: Hard hat (ANSI Z89.1), Safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1), High-visibility vest (ANSI/ISEA 107), Steel-toed boots (ASTM F2413). Task-specific PPE (gloves, respirator, face shield, hearing protection) is assigned by your supervisor.
Inspection & Maintenance
Inspect ALL PPE before each use. Look for: cracks, deformation, chemical staining, expiration dates (harnesses: 10 years), damaged straps or buckles. Damaged PPE must be removed from service immediately and replaced. Never modify PPE.
Hard Hat Classes
Class E (Electrical): protects against 20,000V. Class G (General): 2,200V. Class C: no electrical protection. Class E is required near electrical work. Replace after any significant impact — internal damage is not always visible. Check expiration date on inner shell.
