Types of Respirators
Air-Purifying Respirators (APR): filter or purify ambient air. N95 disposable: blocks 95% of non-oil particles. Half-face/full-face with cartridges: specific cartridge for specific hazard. Powered Air-Purifying (PAPR): motorized, higher protection. Supplied Air (SCBA): independent air supply for IDLH atmospheres.
Selection Criteria
Respirator selection is based on: hazard type (particulate, gas, vapor, combination), concentration (APF — Assigned Protection Factor), oxygen level, and IDLH status. A written respiratory protection program is required by OSHA. Medical evaluation (questionnaire or physical) is required before fit testing.
Fit Testing & Fit Check
Annual qualitative or quantitative fit test is required for tight-fitting respirators. Fit check before EVERY use: Positive pressure check (cover exhalation valve, exhale gently — should feel pressure buildup). Negative pressure check (cover inhalation ports, inhale — facepiece should collapse slightly). Facial hair prevents seal — shave before donning.
Maintenance & Storage
Clean reusable respirators after each use with manufacturer-approved wipes or mild soap. Inspect elastomeric parts for cracking, swelling, and distortion. Replace cartridges per manufacturer schedule or _when you detect odor/taste breakthrough. Store in a sealed bag away from contaminants, heat, and sunlight.
