Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome
Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is caused by prolonged use of vibrating power tools (grinders, jackhammers, drills). Symptoms: tingling, numbness, whitening of fingers (vibration white finger), loss of grip strength. HAVS is irreversible once advanced. Report symptoms early — catching it early can prevent progression.
Whole-Body Vibration
Whole-body vibration (WBV) occurs in heavy equipment operators (forklifts, skid steers, compactors). Long-term exposure causes lower back pain, disc herniation, and digestive problems. Use air-ride suspension seats, take regular breaks, and report seat defects. Properly inflated tires reduce WBV transmission.
Ergonomic Controls
Apply ergonomic controls to reduce strain: use tools at correct height, avoid bent-wrist postures, alternate hands when possible, use mechanical assists for heavy lifts, apply anti-vibration gloves for power tool use, limit exposure time per task. Rotate workers on high-vibration tasks.
Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention
Proper lifting: bend at knees, keep back straight, hold load close to body, pivot don't twist, get help for loads over 50 lbs. Stretch before physical work. Report early symptoms of strain — back pain, shoulder pain, tendinitis. LEO provides early intervention — report before it becomes disabling.
